Take our quick quiz to find the location that’s right for you!
Research travel nursing opportunities, agencies and locations. Consider cost of living and housing options. Gather and organize your documents (licenses, certifications, immunization records, etc.). Think about what you want out of your travel nursing journey!
Partnering with a travel nursing agency and recruiter can make an incredible difference as you transition from student to professional. Your recruiter will be your career advocate. They’ll work closely with you to select a location and assignment that aligns with your desires and needs. Your recruiter will also provide ongoing support as you begin your travel nursing career!
Keep an open mind when it comes to locations and assignments. Seasoned travel nurses often say they gained so much experience from being open to different fields of nursing that they never thought to try. Roll with the punches and be flexible!
As a new graduate, don’t be afraid to ask questions (and take notes) as you start your travel nursing career. When you begin your assignment, learn the facility’s codes, procedures and policies. Do whatever is necessary to get the basics under your belt. Ask coworkers for clarification or guidance – they’re happy to get you up to speed! But write it down – there will be a lot thrown your way and keeping notes will give you a reference point.
Every assignment offers you a chance to gain new skills, references and connections. Treat your time at each place like a probationary period – it will help you make the most out of your experience. Advice from a seasoned travel nurse: “Always do the best job wherever you go! Always have compassion and empathy with every assignment.”
The travel nursing community is special. Travel nurses love to share their tips and tricks with new graduates. When you attend orientation for your new assignment, you will meet nurses in your unit and other travelers that can become lifelong friends. Take advantage of the opportunity to find others that have your same passion for nursing and travel!
Taking the first steps as a new graduate can be nerve-wracking, but remember, you studied for this and you’re ready! There are plenty of travel nursing opportunities and resources to get you started. Many travel nurses say their only regret is not starting sooner. You got this. Just do it!
